I was updating the photos on my photo wall the other day with some more recent images. I had inadvertently put two shots of Nelson Antonio next to each other. It was great to see the growth in his posing and look.

The first photo in the trees was from our first shoot together back in September 2007 when he was using his first name of Nelson.

The most recent shot is from our last shoot in February of 2009. He now goes by his middle name of Antonio.

Obviously Antonio has grown and matured in his modeling skills. It's great to be able to follow a model in his career and see that growth. It brings a great sense of satisfaction to me as a photographer to see the results of the creative process.

Killer Shoot

I had a wonderful shoot this past weekend with Karim. This was the fourth time that Karim and I have shot together. We really 'clicked' on this shoot. He had been hitting the gym hard since the last time we shot in September, so he was feeling confident about the new and improved body. That confidence was infectious and rubbed off on me. We tried some of the usual poses and backgrounds and we tried some new backgrounds with my brick fireplace and some different lighting setups.

It was Karim's idea to get 'dirty' and rub ash from the fireplace all over himself. It think it added a nice touch to the photo. There are more photos coming with the ashy look.

The whole shoot was a creative collaboration... the best kind of shoot. I had a blast!

Georgetown Models

In the last month, I've photographed two students from Georgetown University in Washington DC. Purely coincidence, they don't know each other and contacted me separately to shoot.

Perry (above) is in his final semester before receiving his Masters Degree.

iPhone Sunset

This photo was shot a couple of days ago along the Hudson River. Christian had just bought some new sunglasses at the Columbus Avenue street fair. Seemed like a good use of my new iPhone's 2.0 megapixel camera. I think it showed off the sunset reflection fairly well.

The remnants of Gustav and Hanna both converged on New York City this weekend.

Thirty years ago today...

Thirty years ago today, a scared 17-year-old kid from outside Pratt, Kansas walked into 1500 N. West Street in Wichita, Kansas and asked for Larry Hatteberg. This was just after Hatteberg had won his second NPPA Photographer of the Year award. Hatteberg was the Chief Photographer for KAKE Television, Channel 10 in Wichita.

August 24, 1978 was a day that changed that teenager’s life. It was a morning filled with watching storyteller Hatteberg shoot a story on a fish farmer near Cheney. Then, as happens in television news, the afternoon agenda changed dramatically with a report of an explosion and leak at a Titan II missile silo near Rock, KS and Hatteberg and the teen headed south in Mobile Unit 4 to cover the story.

The next three days were a whirlwind of driving the blue Chevy Nova and 3/4" video tape back and forth from a grassy corner off Highway 15 to the hill on S. Rock Road where Truck 100 could get a microwave signal back to the Holiday Inn rooftop receive site in Wichita.

When the teen’s Skyline High School class ring and right hand holding a microphone made it on ABC’s World News Tonight with Frank Reynolds, Max Robinson and Peter Jennings… he was hooked! It was a life of television news for him!!

That teenager was me.

Thirty years later, I'm the Director of New Technologies for ABC Television in New York. I can't believe it's been 30 years, but it has. It's been a hell of a career. I'm looking forward to more.

A busy weekend...

This past weekend was busy with three shoots and a go-see test shoot. I was very pleased with the images that we created.

Friday was Dominic...


Saturday was Karim...


Sunday was Alexander...


And Monday was a test shoot with Jay...



Now I have a lot of editing and retouching to do. Wish me luck!
